Creating a Quiz Assignment

 

 

Note: Quiz assignments are intended for point based courses and thus competencies can not be used to evaluate quiz assignments.

To create a new Quiz assignment and add it to the Assignment Library:

Click the Add New button from within the Assignment Library and then select "New Quiz Assignment" which will take you to the New Assignment screen.

From the New Assignment screen, add the following assignment information:

  • Assignment Title
  • Description
  • Evaluation Guide URL (if enabled)
  • Questions
  • Resources
  • Quiz Settings
  • Authoring Status

Adding an Assignment Title

Add a relevant and searchable assignment title. This is how the assignment will appear in the Assignment Library.

Note: The assignment title cannot be more than 255 characters. (Your school may want to organize assignments by course name or number so you can find them easily later.)

Note: If an assignment title is not entered, the system will automatically generate one with the date and user’s name.

Adding an Assignment Description

Add a description of the assignment. You can include formatting, hyperlinks, and images using this text editor, or add additional documents and links as resources from the Resource Library.

Note: The description cannot be more than 32,000 characters.

Adding an Evaluation Guide URL

A school can provide a URL for an Evaluation Guide. Enter the URL in the Enter URL field in the Evaluation Guide section. If enabled, the link to the Evaluation Guide is displayed to you when viewing the assignment Preview page, and the Evaluation page for a student.

Note: A system administrator must enable this feature.

Adding Questions

You can add new questions to the assignment or questions from your institution's question bank.

To add a question from your institution's question bank:

  1. Click the Add button within the Questions section.
  2. Select "From Question Bank".
  3. Click the question you wish to add. A pop-up window is displayed.
  4. Click the Add To List button. Continue to repeat step 3 and 4 until all questions you wish to add from the bank have been added.
  5. Click the Close button.

To add a new question:

  1. Click the Add button within the Questions section.
  2. Select "New Question".
  3. Click on a question type to begin writing the question. 
  4. Enter your question in the Compose Question text box. 
  5. Enter values into all related fields fields depending on your selected question type (ex. response options). Remember to use the +Add and Trash Bin buttons to add and remove values respectively.
  6. Enter the number of points the question is worth in the Point(s) field under the Set Correct Answer(s) section.
  7. Depending on your question type, select the correct answer(s) in the Set Correct Answer(s) section.
  8. Add any additional question settings in the More Options section.
  9. Click the Save button at the top of the Add Questions section (not the Save button at the bottom of the screen which is used to save the assignment as a whole).
  10. Click Close.

Tip: Use the Edit|Preview button to preview what your question will look like to students.

Adding Assignment Resources

To add resources to an assignment:

  1. Click the Add from Library button within the Resources section.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Input a URL in the Enter URL field and click the Add button.
    • Click the Choose Files button to upload a local file.
    • Click the Add button next to any of the existing resources within the Resource Library.

Selected resources are added to the right side of the screen.

  1. Click the Save button.

Adding Quiz Settings

From the Publish section on the right side of the New Assignment or Edit Assignment screen, add quiz settings as desired by checking the checkbox fields. These settings include:

  • Show calculator - Displays a calculator button allowing students to click and open a functioning calculator.
  • Show table of contents - Displays a column to the right of the question listing all questions within the quiz. Students can click on a question to quickly navigate to it.
  • Show progress bar - Displays a bar indicating how far the student has progressed through the quiz. As the student continues to enter answers, the bar will continue to fill.
  • Shuffle question order - Randomizes the order that the questions are presented.

Publishing the Assignment

From the Publish section on the right side of the New Assignment or Edit Assignment screen, choose between “Draft” and “Published” in the Status drop-down. Once the assignment is published, it can be connected to a course and assigned to students.

Make sure you click the Save button to save any changes you made to the assignment.

Note: Linked resources are saved to the assignment regardless of whether the Save button is clicked.
